What is ping, and why does it matter?
Ping measures latency, which means the time it takes your computer to communicate with a server. Lower ping is better for real-time collaboration. High ping can cause delays during video calls, making conversation feel sluggish.
What is download speed?
This measures how quickly content from the internet arrives on your device. It’s what keeps streaming smooth, websites loading fast, and video meetings running without hiccups. If you’re working from home, speeds between 10 and 25 Mbps should cover most of what you need.
What is upload speed?
This is the opposite — how fast you can send data out. This is what your colleagues experience when they're watching you on a video call or waiting for that file you're sending. Remote workers should aim for an upload of 3-10 Mbps.
What internet speed do I need for remote work?
For basic remote work (emails, browsing, occasional video calls), 10-25 Mbps download and 3-5 Mbps upload will suffice. For high-quality video calls or sending large files, aim for at least 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. Keep ping under 100ms to avoid that awkward lag where everyone talks over each other.
How accurate is this speed test?
This test gives you a good idea of your current internet connection. For the most accurate results, close any apps using the internet, plug in with an Ethernet cable if you can, and try testing at different times of day. Your speed might change depending on how busy your network is.
