Software Development Engineer II, Maps API

• Build and maintain applications and infrastructure responsible for creating and distributing Mapbox maps. • Work on services seamlessly handling billions of requests every day, scaling in real-time to global events. • Enable designers, developers, and analysts to make and share maps never dreamed of before. • Deliver maps as a model of the world automatically supporting edge cases including writing systems, fonts, local regulations, and global boundary disputes. • Maintain highest-traffic read APIs at Mapbox and distributed ETL pipelines used by internal and external customers. • Build new ways for people to visualize location data turning data into maps. • Develop complex mapping and navigation software for cars, web, and mobile devices. • Work with team serving thousands of customers relying on services daily.

• 5+ years of experience building scalable high volume low latency backend services. • Proficiency in tech stack including Python, NodeJs, TypeScript (backend), and AWS (CDK/ECS/Step Functions/Lambda/S3). • Familiarity with code versioning tools such as GitHub. • Ability to engage, learn, and contribute quickly to initiatives. • Able to perform independently all development tasks based on designs and specs. • Self-starter who is communication and outcomes-oriented. • Empirical analytical approach developing strong hypotheses, conducting spikes, and clearly communicating findings. • Desire to share expertise through documentation, mentorship, pairing, and both written and verbal discussion. • Desire to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. • High quality mindset writing unit tests, proactively remedying defects, and following through to production.

• Experience and knowledge within the mapping domain. • Experience with Amazon RDS. • Experience with C++. • Experience with various security standards and associated technical knowledge. • Background in distributed ETL pipelines. • Understanding of global mapping challenges including boundary disputes and localization. • Experience with real-time location platforms.
