About the role

💼 What you will do

Opportunity Green is seeking a Legal Manager to lead expanding steel-focused legal work driving decarbonization in the sector. You will undertake legal research to identify and develop novel legal strategies (contentious and non-contentious) for systemic change, working at the cutting edge of climate law. This role offers the opportunity to support climate-vulnerable countries and fight climate change through innovative legal pathways across aviation, shipping, agriculture, finance, and steel sectors.

📋 Job Requirements

• Demonstrate passion for using legal skills to tackle climate change. • Hold legal qualification with evident post-qualification experience (note this is not an entry level role). • Show high level of self-motivation and commitment to Opportunity Green's values, ethos and purpose. • Exhibit ability to see solutions to complex problems through creative legal lens. • Prove experience of writing high-quality legal analysis. • Display excellent attention to detail and ability to work with technical and legal material. • Communicate confidently in written and oral form, adapting complex ideas for different audiences. • Show proven project management skills and delivery of projects with impact. • Demonstrate excellent time management with ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and communicate priorities. • Exhibit experience of managing stakeholders including NGOs, legal counsel, and funders.

🎯 Responsibilities

• Lead implementation of legal strategies for driving decarbonization in the steel sector using novel legal approaches. • Undertake legal research to identify and develop additional legal strategies for steel sector decarbonization. • Support existing steel projects including Europe's first climate-related OECD complaint against European steel major. • Think outside the box to develop innovative legal pathways and identify strategic legal action ideas for system change. • Work closely with wide range of organizations to obtain technical and policy insight for developing actionable concepts. • Take forward most promising legal actions with support of wider legal team and lead steel lawyer. • Support other aspects of work including contributing to funding proposals and developing campaign strategy. • Provide legal input into communications and take part in organizational committees. • Support legal work across other sectors and themes such as shipping and aviation.

😃 What Opportunity Green offers

• Work 4-day full-time work week at 28 hours (Monday – Thursday) for work/life balance. • Receive £50,000 salary (UK) or €60,000 salary (Belgium) with fixed salary scales and step increases for strong performance. • Access 10% employer-contributed pension (UK) or 8% employer-contributed group pension plan (Belgium). • Enjoy 20 days' holiday per year plus bank holidays and office closure between Christmas and New Year. • Benefit from progressive family leave policy including 26 weeks' paid leave for both parents. • Access flexibility within hybrid working arrangement with regular team opportunities (London-based or remote in UK with monthly London office visits for 2 consecutive days; Brussels-based with minimum 2 days per week in Brussels office and bi-monthly London travel). • Receive budget to support learning and development plus opportunities to lead projects, publish content, learn from experts, work with policymakers, and attend conferences. • Fully disconnect when taking time off with expectation to do so.
